Installing a greenhouse gearbox correctly is critical to its lifespan and the reliability of your ventilation, rolling film, or shading system. Misaligned shafts, over-tightened couplings, or incorrect mounting brackets are responsible for the majority of premature gearbox failures in the field. For rolling film gearboxes, the mounting bracket attaches to the base rail or vertical post of the greenhouse sidewall structure, at a height that aligns the output shaft centreline with the roll bar centreline. Use a spirit level to ensure the bracket is perfectly horizontal — a 1° tilt across a 50-metre span translates to 870 mm of height difference at the far end, causing the film to roll unevenly. Torque all bracket bolts to the manufacturer’s specified value (typically 20–35 Nm for M8 fasteners in aluminium profiles).
Apply anti-seize compound to the mounting bolt threads before inserting them — greenhouse humidity causes stainless-steel bolts in aluminium housings to gall without lubrication. Tighten bolts in a cross pattern (like wheel nuts) to prevent housing distortion. Do not fully tighten until all bolts are finger-snug; then torque progressively to the final value in two passes. For ventilation gearboxes driving racks, verify the rack and pinion mesh contact is centred across the full tooth face width before final tightening.
When coupling an electric motor to the gearbox input shaft, apply grease to the inner bore and keyway of the motor coupling before assembly to avoid shaft galling. If the motor weighs more than 5 kg, install a support bracket under the motor to prevent cantilevered bending stress on the gearbox input shaft bearings — this is a common installation oversight that causes premature bearing failure. Route electrical cables through conduit rated for outdoor/humid environments (IP65 conduit minimum). All electrical connections must comply with local agricultural electrical codes.

Travel limits are set in the climate controller or motor controller, not inside the gearbox itself.
